Levy was visible with the naked eye and through a scope appeared as a large and very condensed ball of light with a stellar nucleus. The coma was about 10-15 arc min across and I suspected a tail in PA 240 degrees. Magnitude estimate was about 4.5
Comet Brosen Metcalf
20th August 1989 This took some time to locate as it was in a barren area of sky midway between Gemini and Auriga, just above the star 63 Aurigae. Visually it looked like a circular haze with a definite central brightening, rather like a small unresolved globular.
Comet Swift-Tuttle

Comet Austin
Austin was about 6 degrees SE from M31 dated 27th April 1990. I couldn't see it with the naked eye and binoculars only showed a fairly bright patch of fuzz! Through the scope (22cm) at 41x it was a large ball of light with a blazing nucleus, a faint halo of light enveloped the inner structure of the comet. Using a Lumicon deep sky filter a tail was seen stretching away to the NE and although the tail was only faint and about 30' in length without the filter was only suspected.
Comet Ikeya-Zhang
10th April 2002 This comet was in the NNE sky about 25-30 degrees above the horizon and easily seen in 7x40 binoculars as a small fuzzy ball of lihgt. Telescopically it was a large condensed ball of light, diffuse at the edges and suddenly rising in brightness to a blazing nucleus and a faint stellar nucleus. I think there may have been a very faint tail stretching to the SW.
Comet Neat
19th May 2004. Visible in the 10 x 50 finder of my 6 inch F8 refractor as a small but rather bright ball of light. The main scope revealed a large circular nebulous glow with a very bright nucleus fading off into space. At the centre of the glow a minute but prominent stellar nucleus. Trying out various filters perhaps showed a short stubby tail.

Comet Hyakutake
Another great comet- Hyakutake.. or as one guy in my as then local astronomical society used to pronounce it.. .Akkytakky
Comet 168p/Hergenrother
Comet 168p/Hergenrother: 9th October 2012. This was observed with the Watec 120N+ and sketched from the monitor. It had a blazing nucleus, much brighter than any star in the field of view and it had a stubby fan just south of the nucleus. There seemed to be a much broader coma enveloping the nucleus next to a trio of magnitude 10.4, 13.7 and 14.7 stars. At the time of observation it was only 0.4AU's from the Earth.
