At low power M 71 was a moderately bright but small circular smudge of light in a rich star field but upping the magnification to 130x made it quite large in the eyepiece about 7- 8' in diameter but was quite difficult to determine where the edges were as it was quite diffuse and very grainy. A number of faint stars were resolved in the cluster which went down to threshold magnitudes and the periphery of the cluster looked ragged. A magnitude 11 star was seen 2' south of centre.
